October News at ERCLC

ERCLC Families Kayaking at Van Damme State Park

Passion for Learning Projects

A core mission of Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center is to inspire a passion for learning.  We have created a grant fund where students can submit a proposal to ERCLC to help support or develop a project of deep interest to the student.  This might be a specialized tool, book, software, or resource that will help the student achieve his or her project.  Most project requests should be around $100.  An important aspect of the project will be to present it to our community at Exploration Day, Maker Faire, Research Day, the county Science Fair, or some other workshop or event.  If your student is interested in submitting their proposal, they should complete this online request form.  Awards will be made on a rolling basis.

Parent Lounge and Kitchen Use

Administration offices and Parent Lounge share space.  Keep in mind that staff are working and we appreciate your efforts to keep the noise level down.  There is also limited space in the kitchen, and students under 6th grade must be supervised by an adult when using the kitchen.  The Parent Boosters have provided a refrigerator, and there is also a microwave and K-cup coffee machine for parents to use in the Parent Lounge.  Please help us conserve and remember to bring your water bottles.

Recruiting Parents for the ERCLC Booster Club!

The Booster Club needs you!  This organization supports ERCLC through fundraising, potlucks and parent work days.  Meetings are held quarterly online.  If you would like to be more involved, please contact Becky Brown at:  beckyandnick@gmail.com   Membership is FREE!

Returning Resources to ERS

ERS does not assess overdue fees; however, you must notify them if you want to renew any items beyond their due date. This keeps ERS from being able to fulfill requests from other patrons for these items. Everyone receives an “ERS Library – Items Due Soon” email the Friday before their materials need to be returned (all deliveries also come with receipts that note the due dates).  Resources from Fresno families must be put in the Fresno campus ERS Return Box by the Wednesday before they are due in order to allow ample travel time for the Tuesday pick up in Visalia.

Minecraft in Education

Minecraftedu is an online resource which is available to ERCLC students. With Minecraftedu you can recreate scenes from history, create diagrams for digestive systems, and create machines powered by electrical circuits. Contact Ron for more information. ron@erclc.org

Reading Revolution (formerly Battle of the Books)

This is a fun reading competition designed to promote literacy and the joy of reading for students in grades 4-8, regardless of ability. The goal is for students to experience a variety of quality literature and nonfiction, while increasing reading comprehension and promoting collaboration and teamwork.Teams of students read, discuss, and practice quizzing each other in preparation for the actual competition, during which students will answer questions in a variety of formats and with varying levels of difficulty. Please contact either Ananda (7-8 grade), Leslie (4-6 in Fresno) or Yasoda (4-6 in Visalia) with questions or for a book list.

The Fire

What has news, comics, jokes, riddles, advice columns and TONS of humor? The Fire! Students in School Newspaper and Comics class are having fun writing, photographing, interviewing, making comics and accepting submissions from other ERCLC students for their school newspaper project The Fire. History Day

Let Matt know if you are interested in participating in this year’s History Day.  The theme this year is “Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.”  The county competition is not until March 8 but early participation is strongly encouraged to give sufficient time to compile a competitive resource list.  Fourth and fifth grade can enter a 2D poster; students in 6-8 and 9-12 can choose to enter as an individual or in a group of up to 5 in the categories: historical paper, website design, documentary, performance, or exhibit.   To sign up or for more information email matt@erclc.org

Fablearn 2015

On September 27th and 28th, Daniel, Yasoda, Eric and Leslie traveled to Stanford University for the Fablearn Conference.
