Venice On-campus Core Classes

 

ELA
 

This class meets twice a week and is a course targeted to middle school students who are reading at grade level. The class teaches the cycle of The Hero’s Journey, and focuses students on reading to identify the elements of The Hero’s Journey, the elements of good writing and the beginnings of writing academic paragraphs. 

 

Math

 

This class meets twice a week and is taught by a credentialed math teacher. This class focuses on peer-to-peer teaching and learning in a collaborative and supportive setting. 


Science


Our lab classes meet twice a week and are designed to be paired with Edgenuity online science curriculum. We offer labs in Life Science and Physical Science.

 

Social Studies


This class meets twice a week and students learn how to think like an historian. Students learn how to research, write and present information to their peers.

English Core

Oak Meadow

Rich in literature and writing, this curriculum is designed for homeschooling families. It has weekly lessons that work with great literature. There is a writing component built in. 6th-8th grade courses are linked with history/social science curriculum but could be used separately.

Moving Beyond the Page

Moving Beyond the Page is a curriculum developed by homeschoolers that offers units incorporating Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Flexible age ranges allow for students of nearby ages to be instructed together. Grades 1-8

These texts cover a variety of genres of literature with questions following each selection.

6+1 Traits of Writing 


 

Daily Writing Workbook Introduces each trait and provides daily practice building towards a weekly writing prompt. 

 

Traits of Writing Packets Uses picture books to highlight one trait and includes a short “teacher's guide” for additional activities.  

 

Math @ Home

Math Core

Illustrative Mathematics

Our highest recommended middle school math curriculum.  Focuses on understanding of concepts and thinking mathematically. Community of support online, seamlessly transitions to our high school curriculum. Grades 6-8. A support class is offered for levels 6 and 7. After completion of grade 7 the student is ready for Eric’s high school class as grade 8 is much of the same material.

Math Mammoth

Printable textbook, review lessons, and tests. Some online support videos recorded by the author on YouTube.  EC’s can print a consumable copy for you. This curriculum is offered up to grade 7.

Dimensions Math

(By Singapore Math)

Has a strong focus on learning to master and real-world problems. Grades 6-8.  After completion of grade 7 the student is ready for Eric’s high school class as grade 8 is much of the same material.

Studies Weekly

National Geographic

Covers all of the standards with lots of details and questions.  Best used as a starting off point for further reading or investigation. Medieval World History (7th), early US History (8th).

A History of US

A very readable history of the United States, from Book 1 with the Native Americans through book 10 with modern history.  Typical 8th grade US History covers the material in books 3-7.

We the People, level 2

Inquiry based civics curriculum that covers the purpose of government, founding of the US Constitution, the three branches of government, and citizens rights and responsibilities.

Document Based Questions (DBQs)


 

These are great to do occasionally throughout the year. They ask a question and teach students how to use evidence to support their answer. They are able to argue either side depending on how they analyze the evidence. Great support for essay writing using citations. Copies are available in the black cabinets by the printer in the admin building.

Online Learning @ Home
